The highest level of research is a meta-analysis which reviews numerous studies instead of just picking one. When one study is picked there are many factors, but if numerous studies all support the same thing then the results are more conclusive.

First, let’s establish that depression is a major problem in the United States and it seems to be growing. Depression medications are some of the most prescribed medications in the United States and many individuals bounce from one to the other with little to no result. This is what is called “treatment resistant depression”.


What does the research actually show? When multiple studies are looked at there appears to be a consensus that those with depression have lower vitamin D levels than those without depression.

Vitamin D through its actions contributes to:

  • Immunomodulation
  • Inflammation
  • Neurotransmitter Function
  • Hypothalamic-Pituitary Adrenal Axis

Vitamin D specifically has numerous receptor sites throughout the brain. Which naturally leads many to believe that if individuals with depression are supplemented with vitamin D that may prove to be an effective treatment.

There are definitely many individuals who notice improvements in their depression as a result of supplementation, but not everyone. There is no support for global supplementation of vitamin D in those struggling with depression.

As a result it is recommended to have lab work to evaluate vitamin D levels. Regular lab levels are 30-100, but ideally we like at least 50 to be in a healthier range. Depending on your levels the amount of supplementation needed would be different.

If you’ve supplemented with Vitamin D and are still struggling with depression, that is okay. If depression was that simple then no one would be struggling. That is why this next part is essential.
